About Thames Explorer Trust
Our aims
We work to teach people about the Thames so that
everyone can take a part in planning a healthy
future for the river. We want to give people from
all parts of the community the chance to get out
there exploring - along the river, on the foreshore
and on boats.

How we started
The Trust was set up as an educational charity
in 1988 by a group of people concerned for the
future of the Thames. From small beginnings, the
organisation has grown, establishing itself as
an expert in Thames-related matters.
What we do
We want everyone to have the chance to explore
and get to know the Thames in London so we offer:
- river visits for schools, community groups
and adults to investigate the Thames
- training for teachers, youth leaders and staff
of other Thames-related organisations
- educational materials about the whole Thames
Basin
- a consultancy service, offering expert advice
on a range of Thames issues
- this new web site!
We also run projects to help improve education
and access to the river. For example, we have
just finished a three year project to provide
river visits and resources for children with special
needs. We now can offer foreshore visits for children
with learning difficulties, who are in wheelchairs
and those who are blind or deaf. Our latest project
is River
For Life.
We also work with other groups along the Thames
such as the Thames Education Network, the
Environment Agency and the
Thames Estuary Partnership to help plan a
healthy future for the river.
How the Trust is run
Management
The Trust is run by a management committee, currently
consisting of 9 members with a broad range of
expertise and knowledge of river matters. A small
team of volunteers help with project work and
administration.
