What was it like on the Thames foreshore today?
It was an overcast but humid day on the foreshore.
Even though rain was threatening, everyone did
a fantastic job finding animals. We found lots
of fish, shrimp and leeches, and even a hog louse
and a caterpillar. We found the empty shells of
a few Chinese mitten crabs, but no live specimens
(they must have been hiding from us!).
What does our survey us about the "Rhythms
of the River"?
We know that the baby flounder travel up the
river in the late spring/early summer, so the
ones we found are right on time! The shells of
the Chinese mitten crabs let us know that the
crabs are growing- not good news for the river
banks! On a positive note, the other animals collected
today, like the sensitive freshwater shrimp, let
us know that the river is quite clean since they
cannot survive in water with lots of pollution.
