What was it like on the Thames foreshore today?
We were lucky that the weather cleared for the
afternoon and we got some sunshine. The nice weather
helped us to find loads of animals. We found flounder,
as well as lots of shrimps and leeches. We also
found a hog louse and two Chinese mitten crabs,
each about 3cm across the shell.
What does our survey us about the "Rhythms
of the River"?
We know that the baby flounder travel up the
river in the late spring/early summer, so the
ones we found are right on time! We found two
Chinese mitten crabs and took a good look at tall
the damage they are causing on the sides of Chiswick
Eyot. On a positive note, the other animals collected
today, like the sensitive freshwater shrimp, let
us know that the river is quite clean since they
cannot survive in water with lots of pollution.
