What was it like on the Thames foreshore today?
We had an exciting time on the foreshore, even
though we had to brave the wind and showers. Everyone
did an amazing job finding animals, especially
since most things were hiding from the weather.
We found loads of tiny flounder fry (babies),
most no more than 1-2 centimetres long. We found
lots of freshwater shrimp, leeches and snails,
but also more unusual animals like pea mussels
and a tiny Jenkin's spiral shell snail. We also
found a small Chinese mitten crab, which made
us think about where it's mum, dad, brothers and
sisters might be!
What does our survey us about the "Rhythms
of the River"?
Even with the clouds and showers we know that
it is summer in the river! The flounder fry travel
up the Thames in late spring to early summer.
The other animals collected today, like the sensitive
freshwater shrimp, let us know that the river
is quite clean since they cannot survive in water
with lots of pollution. The Chinese mitten crabs
are also around, which is bad news for the island
as the crabs are causing it's sides to collapse.
