What was it like on the Thames foreshore today?
It was a bit cloudy on the foreshore, and we
were on the lookout for rain. But the weather
didn't put us off, and everyone did a great job
finding animals. Fish were the order of the day,
as we found lots of baby flounder and even two
small eels! We also found quite a loads small
Chinese mitten crabs and also a big one which
measured about 6cm across it's shell.
What does our survey us about the "Rhythms
of the River"?
We know that the baby flounder travel up the
river in the late spring/early summer, so the
ones we found are right on time! We are a bit
worried about the number of Chinese mitten crabs
we found, especially since they are so small.
That means the crabs are breeding and there are
even more of them around to damage the island.
On a positive note, the other animals collected
today, like the sensitive freshwater shrimp, let
us know that the river is quite clean since they
cannot survive in water with lots of pollution.
