What was it like on the Thames foreshore today?
We had a fantastic day on the foreshore; the
weather was warm and the sun was shining. Much
to everyone's surprise we found loads of different
animals. We expected to find the leeches, snails
and shrimps, but the flounder and larvae were
quite a find! We found lots of flounder fry (babies),
some just a few millimetres long. We also found
the larvae from mosquitoes, mayfly nymphs and
a mystery nymph (our staff are still trying to
identify it).
What does our survey us about the "Rhythms
of the River"?
Summer is on it's way! The biggest clue is the
flounder fry, which travel up the Thames from
the sea in spring/summer. We also found insect
larvae and nymphs, both of which are around only
when the weather gets warmer. The presence of
all these animals, especially the sensitive freshwater
shrimp and mayfly nymphs, let us know that the
river is quite clean.
