What was it like on the Thames foreshore today?
We had a wonderful day on the foreshore; the
the sun was shining, although it was a bit windy.
Everyone did a great job collecting animals. We
found leeches, snails and shrimps, as well as
flounder, mayfly nymphs and even a water beetle!
The flounder fry (babies) were just a few millimetres
long and were probably only a month or two old.
What does our survey us about the "Rhythms
of the River"?
Summer is on it's way! The biggest clue is the
flounder fry, which travel up the Thames from
the sea in spring/summer. We also found insects
and nymphs, both of which are around when the
weather gets warmer. The presence of all these
animals, especially the sensitive freshwater shrimp
and mayfly nymphs, let us know that the river
is quite clean.
