What was it like on the Thames foreshore today?
It was a grey day, and we had to withstand a
cold drizzle the whole time we were on the foreshore.
But that is what is expected in December! To make
things even more difficult, the tide came in very
quickly; but at least we got to see how quickly
the foreshore disappears. Even though the weather
wasn't on our side, everyone did a great job finding
animals. We found loads of freshwater shrimp,
snails and leeches, as well as two small Chinese
Mitten Crabs and even an estuarine prawn!
What does our survey us about the "Rhythms
of the River"?
Unfortunately, December isn't the best time of
year to find animals on the foreshore. We found
what we had expected. We thought the river was
clean enough to support life, and finding the
pollution sensitive freshwater shrimp proved us
right! Also, it was a good sign to find an estuarine
prawn. However, finding Chinese Mitten Crabs surviving
the cold winter is not good news for the river.
