What was it like on the Thames foreshore today?
It was a quite a clear and crisp early winter's
day, and we had a great time on the foreshore.
Everyone did a brilliant job finding animals.
We found loads of freshwater shrimp, snails and
leeches, as well as eight small Chinese Mitten
Crabs, a swan mussels and even a baby goby, which
is a fish that likes to live along the bottom
of the river.
What does our survey us about the "Rhythms
of the River"?
Unfortunately, December is not the best time
to find animals on the foreshore. But even tough
is was a bit cold, everyone worked really hard
and we found more than we had expected. We thought
the river was clean enough to support life, and
finding so many pollution sensitive freshwater
shrimp proved us right! Also, it was a really
good sign to find so many leeches and snails and
the goby was a briliant find. It's great to see
fish in the river, even if you need sharp eyes
to spot them! However, finding so many tiny Chinese
Mitten Crabs mean that they are still breeding
near the island (Chiswick Eyot), which is not
good news for the river.
