What was it like on the Thames foreshore today?
It was a lovely crisp late autumn day, and the
sun was shining! Everyone did a great job finding
animals. We found loads of freshwater shrimp,
snails and leeches, as well as ten small Chinese
Mitten Crabs and even an stonefly!
What does our survey us about the "Rhythms
of the River"?
Unfortunately, the end of November isn't the
best time of year to find animals on the foreshore.
We found more than we had expected. We thought
the river was clean enough to support life, and
finding so many pollution sensitive freshwater
shrimp proved us right! Also, it was a good sign
to find a stonefly-we usually don't see them until
the spring!. However, finding so many tiny Chinese
Mitten Crabs mean that they are still breeding
near the island (Chiswick Eyot), which is not
good news for the river.
