What was it like on the Thames foreshore today?
We were very lucky with the weather today; rain
was forecast but we had sun! Everyone did a brilliant
job finding animals. In fact, we found the most
different animals so far this year- ten different
species! We found lots of fish, including baby
flounder and mystery fish fry. We brought lots
of animals back to the Pier House to put in the
tanks. Hopefully when the mystery fish gets a
bit bigger we will be able to identify it!
17 June: The mystery fish has been identified!
The baby fish we found today are dace, probably
about 2 months old.
What does our survey us about the "Rhythms
of the River"?
We know that the baby flounder travel up the
river in the late spring/early summer, so the
ones we found are right on time! We also found
a huge mayfly, which are also around in the early
summer. Like most other groups, we found Chinese
mitten crabs, both live and shells. The shells
let us know that the crabs are growing- not good
news for the river banks! On a positive note,
the other animals collected today, like the sensitive
freshwater shrimp, let us know that the river
is quite clean since they cannot survive in water
with lots of pollution.
