What was it like on the Thames foreshore today?
We had a lovely day on the foreshore; it was a
gorgeous autumn day with not a cloud in the sky!
Everyone did a great job looking for animals,
and six different species were found. We found
lots of baby Chinese mitten crabs, but the most
exciting was a huge crab that was hiding under
a rock. It was the largest crab seen by a school
at Chiswick in a long time (maybe ever!). We also
found lots of snails, shrimps and leeches.
What does our survey us about the "Rhythms
of the River"?
What we found today is consistent with other autumn
findings. The freshwater shrimp are doing well,
which is a good sign for the river. However, the
number of baby Chinese mitten crabs is bad news.
The fact that the crabs are multiplying leads
us to think that they will be doing even more
damage in the future.
