What was it like on the Thames foreshore today?
It was a quite a mild autumn day, but was pouring
with rain! Even though we all got wet, everyone
did a great job finding animals. We found loads
of freshwater shrimp, snails and leeches, as well
as twelve small Chinese Mitten Crabs and quite
a few mussel shells.
What does our survey us about the "Rhythms
of the River"?
Unfortunately, rainy weather can make finding
animals a bit difficult. But everyone worked really
hard and we found more than we had expected. We
thought the river was clean enough to support
life, and finding so many pollution sensitive
freshwater shrimp proved us right! Also, it was
a good sign to find so many leeches and snails.
Also, the empty mussel shells lead us to belive
that they have provided a bird or fish with food.
However, finding so many tiny Chinese Mitten Crabs
mean that they are still breeding near the island
(Chiswick Eyot), which is not good news for the
river.
