What was it like on the Thames foreshore today?
We had a brilliant day on the foreshore; the
sun was shining and the weather was warm. Everyone
did an amazing job finding animals- the biologists
of the river better watch out. We found loads
of tiny flounder fry (babies), the first of the
year! Measuring no more than 1-2 centimetres across,
the flounder were so transparent that we could
even see their hearts beating! We also found quite
a few small Chinese mitten crabs, which is bad
news for the river.
What does our survey us about the "Rhythms
of the River"?
Summer is here! Today was the first day of the
flounder fry, baby fish that travel up the Thames
in spring/summer. The other animals collected
today, like the sensitive freshwater shrimp, let
us know that the river is quite clean since they
cannot survive in water with lots of pollution.
The Chinese mitten crabs also survived the winter
and are still multiplying, which is bad news for
the river and it's banks.
