VISIT INFORMATION FOR TEACHERS
"INVESTIGATING THE THAMES"
River Studies for Schools 2007-2008
The Thames in London is often seen as a polluted,
lifeless area of little value for river studies.
Not so! London is here because of the river. This
waterway is a major wildlife corridor through
our capital, a powerful natural force and the
focus for intense debate over its future.
Thousands of school children every year investigate
the river with Thames Explorer through programmes
that promote a deeper understanding of the river
and link directly to the National Curriculum.
On riverside trails you can record evidence of
the growth of London and the impact of settlement
on the river. Many explore the foreshore - an
excellent area for studying the river at close
quarters and for recording evidence of river geography,
ecology and environmental change. It is also one
of the most accessible archaeological sites in
London, full of evidence of the city's past. Whatever
you do, we hope that everyone who visits us takes
away a little bit of the Thames magic!

Which curriculum areas are supported?
All our activities support the National Curriculum
programmes of study from Key Stages 1 to 3. GCSE
and A-level study visits can also be organised.
Our most popular programmes offer activities
in Science, Geography and History. Studying Environmental
Issues offers links to Citizenship. New programmes
are being developed to support work in English,
ICT and Art.
This brochure outlines our most popular programmes.
We can also devise a programme to fit your particular
needs. This service is particularly useful for
GCSE and A-level coursework. All programmes are
of a practical nature, designed to give pupils
an understanding of the river and the skills necessary
to investigate different themes.

Supervision
We recommend a ratio of 1 adult to 6 pupils for
all groups with children aged eleven or under

safe. For children under eight, this ratio is
essential. For pupils over the age of eight, a
minimum of 1 adult per 10 children is necessary.
Special needs
Our activities are aimed at being accessible to
everyone and we offer fieldwork and resources
adapted to a range of special needs. Wheelchair
