EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES POLICY
Statement of Intent
The Thames Explorer Trust is actively opposed
to all forms of discrimination. The Trustees and
all those working on behalf of the Trust will
ensure that it has no discriminatory practices
in recruitment or in the way activities and services
are provided.
The Trust's Constitution
The Trust has been established to bring understanding
and enjoyment of the Thames to a wide audience.
Its constitution specifically identifies certain
groups of people as priority groups to receive
its charitable services. These include people
with disabilities, children and the elderly. Others
may benefit from the work of the Trust but may
be expected to pay towards the cost of services
provided.
Equal Opportunities for all
The Trust will not discriminate against any individual
or group on grounds of age, gender, sexual orientation,
religion, disability or race.
It recognises that to involve certain groups
of potential users, specially targeted publicity
and advance training may need to be provided to
ensure that lack of knowledge, difficulties with
physical access, language, etc, do not exclude
those who would benefit from its work.
General Responsibilities
All members of the management committee, all employees
and any volunteers working on the Trust's behalf
will be made aware of the Equal Opportunities
Policy and how it should underpin their work.
The Trust will keep a simple record of those
who use its services to ensure that it knows whether
any groups are under-represented amongst users.
It will endeavour to target under-represented
groups with publicity for its general activities
and to establish special activities where appropriate.
Every effort will be made to ensure that people
are not thoughtlessly excluded from activities
by access problems or poor publicity. Where the
use of a historic vessel, for example, inevitably
makes access difficult for people with severe
physical disabilities, the access limitations
will be made clear in advance and every effort
will be made to provide accessible vessels where
appropriate. On certain occasions safety considerations
may have to be paramount; a range of activities
will be provided to ensure that the widest possible
range of users benefit from the Trust's work.
The Trust is learning from its experience of
working on the river with children with disabilities,
the elderly and other groups. This experience
will be of value to others and will be shared
in training for teachers and other group leaders.
In turn the expertise of community groups will
be sought to enable maximum benefit from the Trust's
activities for all.
Workers and trustees have a duty to follow this
policy in all their actions towards each other.
